Paula Raubenheimer (Season 1)

Paula Raubenheimer with Sihlalo Nomana and Andre Rhodes.

Paula Raubenheimer is a gardener, occupational therapist, children’s book author and illustrator, and activist. Between 2015 and 2019, she was the lead gardener of one of the last remaining Old Cape Gardens in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

In this episode Paula shares stories about her fight to keep the garden, and everything and everyone growing within it, alive against the odds. She also tells me how, through small acts of resistance against the status quo, the garden is creating an unlikely community in a city marked by stark socioeconomic and inter-ethnic inequalities.

Since we recorded this podcast, Paula has left Stellenbosch and the garden. Nevertheless, this conversation captures her powerful project in full bloom. I therefore hope that it makes for a captivating listen for you, and a powerful treasure for Paula.
